Michigan Penalties for Meth Drug Charges

The penalties handed down for individuals convicted of a crime involving methamphetamine depend on a number of factors. Some of these factors include previous criminal record, whether the offense is charged as a misdemeanor or felony, and the amount of meth you are accused of possessing, distributing, selling, etc.

Methamphetamine is a Schedule II drug, which means it has a high potential for addiction. In many cases, individuals face substantial prison time. The penalties for various criminal offenses related to meth are as follows:

  • Use of meth. In Michigan, if you are found using methamphetamine it is generally considered a misdemeanor. Penalties include a fine of up to $2,000 and up to 1 year in jail, or both.
  • Possession of methamphetamine. Possession is charged as a felony offense, which means the penalties will be more severe. If convicted, you may be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison, required to pay a fine of up to $15,000, or both.
  • Manufacture, distribution, delivery, or possession with the intent to deliver, distribute, or manufacture methamphetamine is a serious felony criminal offense. These are the most serious charges of all, and will leave the convicted individual facing a fine of up to $25,000, up to 20 years in prison, or both.

Keep in mind that the penalties described above would be applicable in the case of an individual with no prior convictions on drug crimes, so the penalties may be enhanced (more severe) depending on the factors mentioned above.
